As I'm sure you've all noticed by now, fun.'s lyrics aren't just random words thrown together. And you may have also noticed similar lyrics in their songs, and I know I've begun to interpret and even journal about some lyrics. But I want to hear some things you guys have noticed about their lyrics. Where do you think the inspiration for some lines come from, what do they mean, and what lyrics seem to go together?

You should definitely post your findings here! I would like to see what you've thought out as well.
Anyways, I acctually just came across these two: "I often find myself here thinking about the birds, the boats, the past loves that flew away or started sinking."
and
"Atleast the birds are singing to me, what they're trying to say I don't know."
AND The Format's "Oceans" for the boats sinking in the ocean? Thats kind of a stretch but hey who knows the guys a genius he could think that up.

birdsboatspastlove"At least the birds...." makes me think of "Now I believe in the sun, it's like a symphony, but what it's trying to play, I don't know." And that leads us back to the question about suns and stars being represented in Nate's lyrics.

The one that always really stuck with me is in One Foot where he says
"I happened to stumble upon a chapel last night And I can't help but back up when I think of what happens inside. I got friends locked in boxes, that's no way to live. What you call a sin isn't up to them. After all, after all I thought we were all your children But I will die for my own sins thanks a lot. We'll rise up ourselves thanks for nothing at all."
I think this one really hit me hard because I am a Christian. But I love it, because it's honest.
But here's my thoughts on this-
He says "I've got friends locked in boxes. That's no way to live. What you're calling a sin isn't up to them." And at first I thought, okay friends in jail. But later I realize he says it "isn't up to them" and being in jail would totally be their fault. So it's metaphorical. What is considered a sin and can make people feel locked up? And that lead me to think homosexuality. Which makes sense, because they're big supporters of gay rights.
Anyway, I really love these lyrics. That's what I've got for that one. I have more, and I will post them as I remember them.
By the way, I agree with Nate on this- Christians are terrible about this. And I'm sorry for that. The loudest "Christians" are the dumbest, and the only ones that are heard. I promise we're not all idiots.

i love them all! they all have Feeling, Thought, And a Voice (if you know what i mean). there all beautiful! but one that gets me is in the dong One Foot, he says "I don't want a new lover, Or a new life, Just somewhere better to die!" and that one really got me! and it made me think, about the world, i thought, what is this world? is this it? ect ect..... but i love in Carry On too, where he says "My head is on fire But my legs are fine Cause after all they are mine Lay your clothes down on the floor Close the door Hold the phone Show me how No one's ever gonna stop us now Cause we are We are shining stars We are invincible We are who we are On our darkest day When we're miles away So we'll come We will find our way home If you're lost and alone Or you're sinking like a stone Carry on May your past be the sound Of your feet upon the ground Carry on" and whenever i listen to that, it makes me feel Great!! and whenever i listen to Fun. it makes me feel good too, it makes me feel good about myself, and it makes me have hope on those days im down! (is it weird that Fun.'s songs make me feel like that?) But i agree with Mika, im not religious in any way, but im open minded to everything!and well yes, some religious people can be annoying, but not most of them! and i am very interested in religion, and i won't not want to be friend with someone just cause they are religious, i will be friend with anyone if they be Black, White, Asain, Gay, or anything else! if they are nice to me, i will be nice to them

Oh yes "I don't need a new love or a new life, just a better place to die" is another one-liner I find myself singing a lot. To me I feel like he's just trying to make the world a better place to live in, and isn't that what we all should be looking to do? Making the world a better place for the next generation?

Another one I've noticed is the 'causing a scene' stuff. Like in The Format's The First Single he says "So let's cause a scene, clap our hands and stomp our feet or something". Then in Take Your Time (Coming Home) he says
"One more thing, I keep having this dream where I'm standing on a mountain Looking out, on the street I can hear kids in low-income housing singing "We're through with causing a scene" I don't know what it means But I too, am through with causing a scene."
So it seems to me like in The Format he was still like an angsty teenager. You know, as a teenager everyone wants to cause a scene, and in TYT it seems like he's grown up, ya know?
But then in OOTT he says "Now I'm causing a scene thinking you need a reason to smile."
So yeah.
Oh, and here's another The Format one-
In The First Single he says "I hate what I've become" and then in Dog Problems he says "When I said, 'I hate what I've become' I lied, I hated who I was"
